Paver Driveways in Walnut Creek

Paver driveways run $10–$30+ per square foot nationally and $20–$30+ in a Bay Area contractor's published guide (HomeGuide; Mr. Pavers). They need at least 6 inches of compacted base and 60 mm (2⅜ in) pavers (ICPI). In Walnut Creek the driveway itself needs no building permit, but a new driveway approach needs an encroachment permit.

Why a driveway needs more base than a patio

Cars put concentrated, turning loads on the surface. ICPI's Tech Spec 2 calls for residential driveways on well-drained soils to have at least 6 in of compacted base, against 4 in for patios, and for pavers in driveways to be 2⅜ in (60 mm) thick (Tech Spec 2). Wet or weak soils need a thicker base, and the guide suggests an engineer familiar with local soils in those cases. ICPI also recommends 45° or 90° herringbone for vehicle areas because it gives the most load-bearing support.

Taking out the old driveway

Most driveway jobs start with demolition. HomeGuide puts concrete driveway removal at $2–$6+ per sq ft (HomeGuide). Ask whether the bid includes saw-cutting at the street, haul-off and dump fees, and what happens if the soil underneath is soft or wet once the slab is out.

The driveway approach and the sidewalk

Confirm with the city or County before work starts; rules and fees change.

Pavers are commonly run right up to the back of the sidewalk, leaving the city approach in concrete. If you want pavers on the approach too, that is a conversation for the encroachment permit.

Permeable driveways

A permeable paver driveway lets rain soak into a deep open-graded stone base instead of running down the gutter. HomeGuide lists interlocking permeable pavers at $15–$25+ per sq ft for driveways (HomeGuide). Large projects that create or replace 2,500 sq ft or more of impervious surface fall under Contra Costa's C.3 runoff measures, and pervious pavement is one of the accepted options (Clean Water Program). Permeable pavers explained.

Slopes and drainage

Many Walnut Creek driveways climb from the street. On a slope, the edge restraint at the low end does real work, and the base has to drain so water does not undercut it. Water from the driveway should go to the street or a drain, not toward the garage or the neighbor's yard.

FAQ

Driveway questions

How much does a 20×20 paver driveway cost?

400 sq ft at HomeGuide's $10–$30+ per sq ft is about $4,000–$12,000+; at a Bay Area contractor's published $20–$30+, about $8,000–$12,000+. Removing the old driveway adds $2–$6+ per sq ft.

How much is a 1,000 or 2,000 sq ft paver driveway?

At $10–$30+ per sq ft, 1,000 sq ft is roughly $10,000–$30,000+ and 2,000 sq ft roughly $20,000–$60,000+. At Bay Area rates of $20–$30+, the same areas are $20,000–$30,000+ and $40,000–$60,000+.

Are paver driveways more expensive than concrete?

Usually, yes. HomeGuide puts poured concrete at $4–$15+ per sq ft and pavers at $10–$30+ (HomeGuide). Pavers buy you repairability (lift and relay a settled spot) and more design choice. Compare them.

Do I need a permit to replace my driveway in Walnut Creek?

Not for the driveway on your property: the City says you can replace a driveway without a permit. Replacing the driveway approach or the sidewalk in front of your property does require an Encroachment Permit (City FAQ).
